Eastern students, parents, guardians, and community,
Welcome! I am extremely honored and excited to serve as the new Eastern Middle/High School Principal! Eastern is a wonderful community with wonderful people and I am thankful to have the opportunity to be a part of the Eastern Local School District.
The 2018-2019 school year will be my thirteenth year in education. I have served in the Eastern district for four years and spent the past two years as the Dean of Students. Prior to becoming an administrator, I taught high school social studies.
As principal, I am committed to seeing Eastern continue to grow as one of the premier districts in southern Ohio and build on the successes that we have already achieved. Over the past several years, Eastern has seen a substantial increase in enrollment, expanded college prep (dual credit and advanced placement) courses offering college credit to EHS students, significantly increased the number of Chromebooks and Brightlink smart projectors in classrooms, implemented the WINGS (high school) and SOAR (middle school) programs to increase student motivation, and added staff to increase focus on tested areas, better serve special education students, and reduce class sizes. However, I am convinced that the single most important factor that makes Eastern Local School District such a wonderful place is our people. We have incredibly bright students with enormous potential, a staff that is deeply committed to our students and passionate about their education and overall well-being, and a community that provides unwavering and relentless support. Because it is our people that make us such a wonderful school district, I will continue to invest time, attention, and resources into the growth and support of our students and staff and to continue to build strong relationships with and garner support from our community.
This school year will see some new and exciting additions to our curriculum. We are continuing to expand our technology curriculum by offering new courses in coding and adding newly upgraded web design curriculum, as well as an online course in digital photography. We will also be adding an ACT prep course, allocating more time to provide end-of-course exam preparation and remediation, and introducing new health curriculum to better prepare students for the pressing issues of today's world, including the opioid epidemic and teen dating violence. In addition, EHS will be cooperating with Ohio University to develop their pilot Transition-to-Work endorsement to help prepare high school seniors to enter the workforce. Finally, EHS will also be collaborating with the OSU South Endeavor Center and other local businesses to provide seniors with opportunities to tour businesses, job shadow, and practice interviewing skills.
Finally, the safety and security of our students is always of the utmost importance. Many changes and additions have been made to ensure our students are learning in a safe and secure environment. The district began new safety training for staff at the end of last school year and will continue that training at the beginning of this school year. The training is being carried out in conjunction with the Pike County Sheriff’s Department. The district will also employ a full-time deputy/school resource officer who will be in the building all day, every day this year. Other new safety measures include fewer doors utilized as entrances in the morning (all of which will be supervised), parking lot/driveway/traffic flow changes to ensure pedestrian safety, and floor-locking deadbolts installed in the interior of every classroom in the district. Additionally, the district will now house a mental health counselor providing important mental health services for our students.
A few things to keep in mind as the school year begins:
- Please take time to carefully read and review the Eastern Middle/High School Student Handbook with your child; specifically, the student code of conduct and the attendance policy.
- Middle/High School student drop-off and pickup is on the right side of the building in the visitor parking lot. All students being dropped off must enter the front of the building.
- Students arriving before 8:00 a.m. must report to the cafeteria for supervision.
Thank you for entrusting the Eastern Local School District with the safety and education of your child. I’m looking forward to a wonderful year and please know that my door is always open and I look forward to meeting and hearing from you soon.
