Primary teachers (K-2) have the important job of teaching students to read. The main focus in grades K-2 is reading and math. Teachers are using short formative assessments to monitor student progress and Response to Intervention (RtI) within each grade level. Special classes for grades K-2 students include music, art and physical education.

The intermediate grades (3-5) consist of three or four teachers per grade level. Each teacher is responsible for a core subject area of reading/language arts, math, and science/social studies. Students have three 80-minute periods per area. Student progress is monitored by the use of short formative assessments. Special classes include technology, music, art and P.E. Some 5th grade students have band instead of music.
