Updated COVID Guidance & Procedures Announced

Parents and Staff,

We have received new guidance from the Ohio Department of Health through the Pike County Health Department regarding the Covid-19 Virus.  This new guidance changes the procedures we use in dealing with students and staff members who may have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for Covid-19.  As we as a District have followed the guidelines sent to us from state and local agencies from the beginning of the pandemic, the Eastern Local School District will implement the recommendations that we have received.  The changes that will take effect immediately follow:

  1. Contact tracing will no longer be completed by the school district or the Pike County Health Department.

  2. No student or staff member who has been exposed to someone who has tested positive for Covid-19 will be required to quarantine.  Both students and staff members who may have been exposed may continue to come to school, but will be expected to wear a mask for 10 days from the date of their last exposure and monitor for symptoms.

  3. Student athletes who may have been exposed to someone who had tested positive for Covid-19, may continue to participate in their sport, but will be expected to wear a mask for 10 days from the date of their last exposure and monitor for symptoms.

  4. If a student or staff member has Covid-19 symptoms, he/she should stay home and consider being tested for the Covid-19 virus.

  5. Parents, with this new guidance, the authority and responsibility to ensure compliance now belongs to you.  It is important that you have your child follow the 10 day mask guidelines if he/she has been exposed to the virus.  If your child does not have a mask, the school will provide one for them upon request.

Some procedures and directives have not changed and remain in effect.  They are:

  1. If a student or staff member tests positive for Covid-19, he/she will need to quarantine for 5 days from symptom onset and then wear a mask for 5 additional days upon return to school.  If a fever is still present or other symptoms have not greatly diminished by day 6, the quarantine period may be extended.

  2. Students and staff riding on a school bus must still wear a mask, as this is a Federal requirement.

  3. Eastern Local School District staff are still required to wear a mask in certain situations during the school day.

Please keep in mind that the Covid-19 guidelines are subject to change.  We will keep you informed of any changes that we receive from the health department.

I want to thank you in advance for your assistance in implementing these guideline changes.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at 740-226-4851.

Sincerely,

Rick Bowman

Superintendent
